Comparing The Similarities And Differences Of ATVs And Motorcycles As Modes Of Transport

All terrain vehicles or ATVs and motorcycles have things in common and things that differ. Some commonality if that each is a form of modified bicycle with a motor. The method of driving them is achieved by the driver sitting astride the vehicle, while using the handlebars to control speed and steering. They also have a number of differences which are mentioned below.
First of all are the numbers of wheels that are present on each type of vehicle. ATVs more commonly known as quad bikes and generally have four wheels, but may also be three-wheelers as well, whereas motorbikes have two wheels. The extra wheels on the quad bikes gives greater stability for the driver at slow speeds and over rough terrain, whereas the motorbikes, just as with bicycles require the rider to balance on the two wheels. Increased skill is needed on motorcycles at slow speeds.
Invention: invention occurred at different times. The motorcycle was invented in 1885 whereas the first quad bike was in 1982. The first motorbike was made from a modified wooden bike which had a gas engine attached to it, hence the name. The quad bike was invented as a recreational tool for beginner
In some countries, including and not exclusive to the United States, passengers are not allowed on quad bikes. This is for safety reasons because a passenger would prevent the driver from being able to manoeuvre easily. Motorcycles are comparably safer to have passengers.
Quad bikes are bigger than motorbikes and so occupy more space during storage and transportation. It is illegal to drive on public roads with ATVs and so persons wishing to make use of them must transport them in specialized trailers to the intended destination. Their two-wheeled counterparts on the other hand can be ridden on public roads or transported a trailer.
Safety: in terms of serious injuries and death caused by accidents, motorcycles are safer than ATVs. Motorcycle drivers have a tendency of wearing helmets particularly when travelling off road in comparison to the ATV drivers who do not. The quad bikes, being heavy, can also crush the driver during an accident causing much more serious injuries or death.
Both types of vehicles have got a range of engine sizes depending on the amount of power that the driver wants. Both also have smaller sizes available for children to ride. It is advisable that children ride with adult supervision and whilst wearing the right safety gear, particularly helmets.
